It was an impressive performance last night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC Fight Night, as Cynthia Calvillo, 9W 1L 1D, wins her flyweight debut against the divisions number one contender, Jessica “Evil” Eye, 15W 8L 1NC. Calvillo was clearly the smaller fighter as she jumped up a weight class, however she stayed busy and gritty on the feet while landing several takedowns allowing her to go for submissions. Evil Eye was the stronger of the two, but that didn’t stop Calvillo from executing her game plan and controlling the fight when it went to the ground. Just like the Funk Master, Calvillo is an expert at taking someone’s back; she’s the female version of the human backpack. This is the first time both women have gone 5 rounds, as Calvillo pulls off the victory scoring a unanimous decision with all three judges. The win will earn Calvillo a ranked position in the UFC Women’s Flyweight division and one step closer to a title shot.
