This movie has been in the making for quite some time and although it’s been said production has been placed on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release date is still slated for May 7, 2021. Shang-Chi made his first comic book appearance in 1973 in Marvel’s Special Marvel Edition #15. By issue #17 Marvel changed the name to The Hands of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu, and the series lasted until 1983. Shang-Chi is a trained assassin raised by his father, supervillain Dr. Fu Manchu, and the two would eventually become arch-enemies. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be the first Marvel film with an Asian lead. Chinese-American writer, David Callahan, was brought in to write the screenplay, and Japanese-American film maker Destin Danielle Cretton to direct. Marvel has full intentions on having Asian and Asian-American themes, by utilizing Asian and Asian American filmmakers for this movie. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be included as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
