In a recent back and fourth Twitter banter between UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon “Bones”Jones, 26W 1L 1NC, and current UFC top heavyweight contender Francis “The Predator” Ngannou, 15W 3L, Jones has verbally announced on social media he would be willing to go up in weight to face Ngannou at heavyweight. The two seem to have a mutual respect for each other, as the back and fourth social media posts have been mild, but rather forthcoming. Ngannou’s recent knockout win at UFC 249 created a buzz which might’ve got Jon’s attention. On May 13, 2020, at UFC Fight Night in Jacksonville, Ovince Saint Preux went up in weight and fought at heavyweight against Ben Rothwell. After the fight, Jon posted this on his twitter: “Man it was weird seeing OSP fight at heavyweight, made it seem so much more real for me. Especially knowing he was at 240lbs. With a little more cardio, he would’ve been🍒I was visualizing myself as him that whole fight “. After the tweet Ngannou did not hesitate to weigh-in and released his own tweet, “How real it seemed to you my friend?!” – and this has been the spark of our newest MMA love affair. The following day Jon posted this on his Twitter: “Who would you guys consider the quicker and more technical striker Thiago Santos or Francis? If you guys think I wouldn’t take this fight you’re insane. I have absolutely nothing else to prove as a light heavyweight. I’d love that big money fight right around now. Send the deal”. And there you have it ladies and gentlemen, Jon “Bones” Jones just asked for the contract to fight Francis “The Predator” Ngannou! Ngannou did respond to Jon’s last tweet with this to say: “If you think you can handle my technique level that’s fine 🤷‍♂️but I agree with you that you don’t have anything to prove in LHW division and that this should be for bags 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰”. Jon has received major criticism for making such a bold statement however the MMA community is absolutely intrigued by this match up. We’ve all been waiting for Jon Jones to go up in weight anyway but against the guy at the top of the heavyweight food chain? Is Jon making the right decision here or is he stamping his name as the greatest mixed martial artist to ever do it? Time will tell if this match up is ever booked and if Jon wins there is no denying his legacy.
